Alex helped Jill from the car with her left hand. Jill winced when she stood and steadied herself against Alex. The spring air was crisp, but held a hint of warmer weather. Alex inhaled deeply, enjoying the freshness, trying to get the smell of hospital from her nose. They walked slowly up the sidewalk, looking like two soldiers returning from battle. Jill still wore her bloodstained clothes, and Alex sported a sling on her right arm. Sarah and Michelle trailed after them, carrying Jill’s suitcase and a bag of Chinese carryout. Even though they showed no physical evidence of the day, their faces told the story. It was rare to see either looking tired, but tonight, they looked exhausted. Their normally youthful faces were hardened with concern.

When they got inside, Alex looked at the flight of stairs with trepidation. They looked steeper than she remembered. Sarah and Michelle scurried around them and hit the stairs first. Alex took Jill’s hand as they made their slow ascent. By the time they reached Alex’s apartment, Michelle had stashed Jill’s suitcase in the guest bedroom, and Sarah had put the food into the refrigerator.

“Are you sure you don’t need us to stay and help out?” Michelle asked.

“No, thanks,” Alex said. “I think a quiet evening is in order.”

“What? You’re saying that you can’t have a quiet evening with us around,” Sarah said.

“I’m sorry, but the word quiet and Sarah should never be used in the same sentence,” Alex shot back.

Michelle ignored the banter and approached Jill, who stood quietly just inside the door. “Are you going to be okay, honey?”

Jill smiled slightly. “I’ll be fine.”

“I’m sure Gimpy over there will take good care of you.” Michelle motioned toward Alex.

Jill’s smile widened as she looked at Alex. “She always does.”

Alex joined them, putting her arm protectively around Jill. “I promise I’ll look after her. Thank you for everything. Don’t tell Sarah, but I’m not sure what I’d do without you two.”

“Your secret is safe with me,” Michelle said while Sarah stood next to her pretending not to listen.

After a round of hugs and more reassurances that Jill would be okay, Sarah and Michelle disappeared down the stairs.
